FireSpot™ is a software program created by SkyBase to facilitate the documentation requirements of fire hot-spot detection and digital returns for qualifying to supply Hot Spot detection services in Western Canada. FireSpot™ takes all the struggle out of uploading the fire burn area to your Garmin GPS, creating the map with flown track, hot-spot and helipad coordinates, and map print outs. This is easy enough for non computer geeks to use so either the IR tech and/or the pilot could use this software ... no expensive GIS tech that you can't afford to keep around after the fire season is over.
If you’re a helicopter pilot or IR camera operator documenting hot-spots and preparing digital returns, you’ll be happy to know that this program eliminates the need to hire a GIS tech for this short and sporadic season. Your job is to find and record all the hot-spots in the fire area. With a few easy clicks, FireSpot™ will display the boundary of the fire area on your Garmin GPS. Fly and document the hot-spots and helipads as you normally would. When you’re done, build the map to your required specifications (coordinate system etc), and save in .pdf format for future printing. You’ll have the coordinates of the hot-spots and helipads, and an appropriately documented map complete with legend, as well as all required flight and operator information. There’s even a place for your company logo on the corner. Save all the required data back to the memory card and hand it back – you’re done!
Coordinates of the hot-spots and helipads, and an appropriately documented map complete with legend, as well as all required flight and operator information. Not presently part of the requirements but logically a necessary component, we also produce a file ready to load directly to Garmin GPS units for the ground fire crews ... no more pounding in every hotspot by hand !
FireSpot is a PC program. If you are a Mac user, Parallels or other software is required. *** FireSpot can communicate with any land based Garmin GPS unit and the older 296 aviation models for sharing both waypoints and tracks. The nüvi line of automotive units however can only download the track, they cannot upload a track. An example of tracks you'd want to upload is the fire boundary.
